Where possible, community engagement should be continued or even enhanced during a pandemic, to address the most pressing needs of communities and to help maintain trust in science.
Our research has shown that meaningful community engagement is essential during infectious disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies to ensure that research findings are effectively implemented locally and to avoid asymmetries of power in global health research.
